Officials break ground for Lin’s Market on Mall Drive; STGnews Videocast

ST. GEORGE — Associated Food Stores’ grocery chain Lin’s Market held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday morning for its fifth location, Lin’s Fields, located at 2928 E. Mall Drive in St George. The new a 52,300-square-foot store is tentatively set to open in early 2016.

Representatives from Associated Food Stores and America First Credit Union attended the ceremony, along with St. George City officials and multiple construction and planning partners. Overall, attendance was around 40 people.

The new project has been designed by local architects at MRW Design. MRW Design, one of the more prolific design/architect firms in the South West for more than twenty years. Using a “Design Build” method that creates a communicative and interactive team consisting of the owner, architect, contractor and consultants has allowed the new Lin’s grocery store project to come together in a very efficient way, allowing all parties to contribute in a way that makes the sum greater than its parts.

The Mall Drive Bridge, which officially opened in September 2014, greatly helps the location of the new store.

“Without the Mall Drive Bridge,” St. George City Councilman Jimmie Hughes said, “this piece of property right here becomes a little more hard to get to, a little less appealing — and probably not appealing at all for this type of project.”

The new, upscale store will offer the finest fresh produce, meats prepared on a butcher block, a scratch bakery and state-of-the-art meal options. A fresh food kiosk will feature sandwiches and pizza cooked to order. The new store will also feature an America First Credit Union, a Starbucks and a Dairy Queen. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy all these amenities in a beautifully decorated glass atrium with abundant seating, USB power outlets and Wi-Fi access.

Steve Miner, president of market development for Associated Food Stores, said the new store means greater convenience and service to meet the diverse food needs of those in the area, whether it be for a sit-down meal or a snack for soccer moms on the go. High emphasis will be placed on fresh foods and expanded produce and meat.

“We’re going to have an alternative meal solution for those that are on the run and want to get around quickly,” Miner said.

Rodney Orton, son of Lin’s Market founder Lin Orton, attended the ceremony and said that while his family sold Lin’s to Associated Food Stores 15 years ago, they have always stayed involved with the business, especially the St. George and Hurricane locations.

Rodney Orton praised the new Mall Drive location.

“First and foremost, the legacy of my father, Lin,” he said. “It’s not often in a family you get to continually see your father’s name. … It’s a great legacy that my father started. This continues that legacy.”

Find much better prices at Albersons across the street. Lin’s …you suck!

I would sure be nice if Lin’s would consider including solar in their plans for their new store and help set a standard for new development. Stores elsewhere have started putting up solar-covered parking to not only help themselves through power generation but also help their customers by providing covered parking. I’d pay more to shop at a store that provided that. If it helped cut their energy costs, they might not even have to charge more to customers.
