ST. GEORGE — An 86-year-old man who was walking with his dog and was struck by an SUV crossing Sunset Boulevard Wednesday morning has died due to injuries sustained during the incident, police confirmed Wednesday afternoon.
The man, Gerald Gilsdorf, of St. George, was initially sent to the hospital following the incident, which also resulted in the dog’s death.
Gilsdorf was transported by ambulance to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George and later transported to University Medical Center in Las Vegas via Life Flight, where he died.
Gilsdorf was attempting to cross Sunset Boulevard near 1400 West around 7:15 a.m. A vehicle traveling east was attempting to make a left turn northward onto 1400 West. Gilsdorf was in the center turn lane and was struck by the vehicle.
The eastbound Kia Sorento SUV that struck Gilsdorf, driven by a 59-year-old woman, was slowing down to turn onto 1400 West. While doing so, the driver struck Gilsdorf and his dog with the passenger-front corner of her vehicle.
“(He) appeared to be crossing Sunset just west of 1400 West, not at a crosswalk, not even at an actual intersection, just mid-block,” St. George Police Officer Tyrell Bangerter said.
It is estimated the vehicle was traveling between 20-25 mph.
The driver of the vehicle was uninjured.
“This accident is under investigation and will be reviewed for potential criminal charges,” police said Wednesday afternoon. “It is believed that the early morning sun may have been a factor in this accident.”
The incident is still under investigation.

Another thing you and I agree on Native. This is not the place for rude comments. From the story it doesn’t sound as if the driver was doing anything really wrong. She was driving slowly, probably not on a cell phone and she was not near a controlled intersection. Sad story for all involved. I hope everyone involved is able to heal and heal quickly.

I got done donating about 7 am that morning I saw the accident but was about 2 to 3 blocks away with the sun in my eyes so I didn’t see much
Does anyone know if he has any family ? I used to see him and his dog walking around our neighborhood often and talked with him once. He seemed to be very lonely.
