ST. GEORGE — A momentary distraction resulted in a young man from Hildale, who was driving a Suzuki SUV, crashing into the back of a pickup truck on 700 South Thursday.

“Both vehicles were going westbound on 700 South through the construction area,” St. George Police Officer Jamison Hale said. “Traffic comes to a stop. The first vehicle in front (the pickup) starts to slow down. The second vehicle (the Suzuki) behind him sees him slowing down. (The Suzuki driver) reaches down for his drink.”

Hale said the pickup driver had to apply his brakes quickly and was struck from behind by the Suzuki.

The Suzuki sustained minor front-end damage in the collision. Hale said the Suzuki struck the trailer hitch attached to the pickup’s frame, so the pickup truck was not damaged.

Fluids were leaking from the Suzuki’s engine, and the airbags deployed. It was towed from the scene.

The pickup driver complained of neck pain but refused medical treatment, Hale said. The Suzuki driver and his passenger were uninjured.

The driver of the Suzuki was cited for careless driving.

All drivers and the passenger were wearing seat belts.

Traffic on 700 South at 1000 East was slowed for about 30 minutes while cleanup and investigation of the incident took place.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

What he said: “I was reaching for my drink”.
The would have said if he was telling the truth: “I was texting/calling someone instead of paying attention to my driving”.
