WASHINGTON CITY — A semitruck hit a Toyota Camry Saturday afternoon in Washington City during the rainstorm that hit much of Southern Utah.
The collision happened on Interstate 15 near the Green Springs Drive Exit to Washington City at about 4:30 p.m..
Traffic going southbound had stopped momentarily on I-15, Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Chris Terry said, but the 20-year-old man driving the semitruck didn’t notice in time.
He tried to brake but wasn’t able to stop due to the amount of water on the road, and the semi jackknifed and hit the back of a silver Toyota Camry, which was driven by a 50-year-old woman.
Traffic on I-15 was delayed for another five minutes because of the accident, Terry said, but the two drivers quickly moved their vehicles off of the interstate to a Chevron near the exit.
Neither car had any passengers, and the drivers were not injured.
The driver of semi was cited for following too closely and driving too fast for the existing conditions.
The drivers were able to drive both cars from the scene, as damage was contained to the back right bumper of the car and some cracks in the semi’s front bumper.
