HURRICANE — A shed went up in flames Wednesday evening when a family was lighting fireworks in Hurricane that sparked a brush fire.
Firefighters received a call at 8:15 p.m. for a brush fire at the intersection of 1300 South and 180 West that burned the house’s side yard and spread to a shed at the bottom of a foothill.
While the shed was attached to the family’s house, firefighters were able to put the fire out before it reached the main house.
The fire took out a side wall of the shed and part of the roof structure, causing damages of up to about $3,000 to $3,500, Hurricane Valley Fire Chief Tom Kuhlmann estimated.
The damage on the side yard included trees that were burned down.
Firefighters were also concerned about power lines near the house, as the fire was at the base of a power pole, so Rocky Mountain Power was called out, but power in the area wasn’t affected.
There were no reported injuries from the fire.
Hurricane City Police officers on scene issued a citation for a fireworks violation, Hurricane City Police Sgt. Brandon Buell said.
This is because Hurricane is currently under level 3 fireworks restrictions, Kuhlmann said, meaning that lighting fireworks in the Hurricane city limits will only be allowed from July 21 to 27.
On those dates, fireworks can be lit between the hours of 11 a.m. and 11 p.m., Kuhlmann said, and only at three specific locations.
Those places are the Spilsbury Park ballfields, the American Legion ballfields and Three Falls Park.
The restrictions are important, Kuhlmann said, because of the high risk of larger fires right now.
“If we’d have had a breeze tonight, we’d probably be on this fire for several days,” he said. “And it’d put other homes at risk.”
