ST. GEORGE — Police responded to a collision on River Road in St. George Tuesday when a man driving a truck hit a man in a wheelchair.
The man in the truck was waiting to turn right onto 700 South, St. George Police Sgt. Wade Johnson said, and looked left to check for oncoming cars.
As he started to turn, he felt a bump, Johnson said, and saw a hand come up in front of the truck.
The man got out of his vehicle and saw that he had bumped into a man in a wheelchair who was in the crosswalk on his way to catch a bus, Johnson said.
The man in the wheelchair was not injured, Johnson said, but had some marks on his shirt as a result of the collision.
His wheelchair was undamaged, Johnson said, and he was able to catch his bus.
Responders and those involved in the incident were quickly moved from the street to the Maverik gas station at that intersection, so traffic was not blocked.
The truck driver was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian in the roadway.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

Big lifted pickups ALWAYS have the right-of-way over pedestrians. Wheelchair guy should of know this!
Have you ever noticed people here stop their cars in the crosswalks? That’s a big no no. In fact, yesterday, I was driving westbound on 100 S and a student driver (guided by a public school teacher) made a right hand turn on to Bluff street from the shoulder. I guess the teacher (who is teaching driving) doesn’t know it is illeagal to turn from a shoulder that has a solid white line. Now, if there is a break in the white line then a car may enter and use as a turning lane. Same goes for the road coming out of Bloomington Hills and turning on to Brigham Road. Long solid white line… not a designated turn lane. Time for SGPD to start watching those areas and issue warning and/or tickets.
Or maybe SGN could have a weekly article from the SGPD giving the good folks of Washington County help hints.
Good observation. 95% of local drivers use these as turn lanes – including SGPD. In my opinion, many of these should be marked as turn lanes. I’ve noticed that 99% have no concept of what a solid white line means!
