LITTLEFIELD, Ariz. — A Texas man was arrested in Mohave County, Arizona, near Littlefield Friday morning for car theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Jose Antonio Escobar, a 34-year-old from Haltom City, Texas, was stopped for speeding by Mohave County Sheriff’s deputies at about 1 a.m. near milepost 1 on Interstate 15.
Escobar was driving 104 mph in a 75 mph zone, according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office, and when deputies ran his car information, they found it had been reported stolen out of Texas.
The car is a black Honda Accord, which was towed from the scene of the traffic stop.
Escobar told police the car was his wife’s and he did not know why she would report it stolen, according to the press release. As this report is published, information regarding whether the vehicle did, in fact, belong to his wife was not available from the Sheriff’s Office.
Escobar showed deputies a bill of sale for the vehicle but was still arrested. Regardless of documentation, Mohave County Sheriff’s Media Spokesperson Trish Carter said, when a vehicle is reported stolen from another agency, the Sheriff’s Office acts on that report.
Upon searching the car, responders found a glass pipe.
An officer from the Mesquite Police Department was at the scene to assist, and Escobar was arrested without incident, the press release said.
Escobar was arrested for theft of means of transportation and possession of drug paraphernalia, both felonies, according to the press release.
He was originally booked into the Mesquite Detention Center. He has since been transported to the Mohave County Jail in Kingman, Arizona.
Escobar had been traveling to Las Vegas with a passenger he had picked up in Denver, Carter said. She said she did not know the relationship between the two men.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
