ST. GEORGE – After four months of being closed for construction, Indian Hills Drive in St. George was reopened to traffic Thursday.

The rebuilt roadway features wider shoulders to increase the safety of bicycles and pedestrians, the City of St. George said. Curves along the road have also been made smoother for automobiles.

Previously, the road was only 20 feet wide, but was widened to 34-35 feet as part of an effort towards active transportation.

Active transportation encourages walking, running, biking and other nonmotorized forms of transportation, a concept that is growing nationally and is especially suited to Southern Utah’s climate, Marc Mortensen, a Southern Utah Bicycle Alliance board member and the assistant to the St. George City manager, said in an earlier interview.

Indian Hills Drive is heavily used by both commuter cyclists and recreational cyclists as an alternative to Dixie Drive, which has a lot of traffic.

The project is an example the city’s Active Transportation Committee, a 13-person committee appointed by St. George Mayor Jon Pike to represent the city, the cycling community, the business community and the health community.

The committee was created to represent the needs of the city’s walkers, runners and cyclists and advises city planners as they maintain existing infrastructure and create new infrastructure to serve those who use active methods of transportation.

Indian Hills Drive was closed for construction March 23.

I wonder if there are plans to resurface Dixie Drive – it’s pretty bumpy in spots. It gets kind of challenging for the drivers running through the curves at 60 mph!
