ST. GEORGE – A man allegedly under the influence of a prescription sleep aid was arrested for DUI Tuesday morning after dozing off while driving and crashing into another car, causing it to flip on to its side.
Around 7:30 a.m., St. George Police officers responded to vehicle crash in the area of 360 North and 1120 West. They found a white car up on the curb, and a red car also up on the curb and on its side.
“The driver (of the white car) had taken some Ambien prior to leaving work this morning,” St. George Officer Tyrell Bangerter said. “He got delayed … (and) was having a hard time staying awake.”
The man turned onto 350 North from Valley View Drive and was almost home when he fell asleep, Bangerter said. The driver ended up drifting over to the right and hit the red car that was parked on the side of the street. The impact sent the red car onto the curb and rotated up on it’s side.
The man was able to get to his home nearby and alert his wife of the situation and then returned to the scene. Police conducted a field sobriety test and the man was subsequently arrested for DUI, Bangerter said.
No injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved. Both cars had to be towed from the scene.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement and may not contain the full scope of findings.
