A treasure hunt for the frugal shopper

ST. GEORGE — Remember those treasure hunts you used to go on as a child? That feeling of finding a little piece of treasure, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant? One may say there’s no better feeling in the world.

This sensation is what frugal shoppers search high and low for. Traders Discount Markets opened its first store in St. George about a year ago, inviting all economically conscience shoppers to shop their wide and varying selection of inventory.

The store carries food, coffee, bakery items, household items, health and beauty, pet products, toys, tools, cleaning and paper products, drinks, protein bars, plants, car maintenance items and much more. Traders is dedicated to offering popular name brand products at extremely discounted rates.

“We do our best to know what the grocery prices are in our community and we try to price all of our products 40 percent to 60 percent lower than anyone else in the area,” Landau said, “that’s our goal.”

Traders is able to offer low prices for many reasons. Inventory comes from other stores due to inventory changes, packaging changes or newer products pushing them off the shelves.

“There’s a lot of product that end up as excess inventory,” Landau said. “There’s a price elasticity that allows people to feel more comfortable trying new things as well as purchase well known staples at extreme discounts.”

Frugal shoppers come in all different ages and lifestyles.

Traders offers 10 percent off a shopper’s entire purchase for seniors, 55 and over, on Wednesdays.

Beginning Aug. 11, Traders offers 10 percent off a shopper’s entire purchase for Dixie State University students and faculty with a Dixie ID on Tuesdays.

The store is also stocked with free boxes and there are always fountain drinks for 50 cents – all day, every day.

“Our store reaches across all economic levels … because there’s no reason for anyone to waste money,” Landau said. “With cereal climbing to $4 a box or bag at other stores compared to a starting price of $1.29 at Traders, and coffee at $10 to $12 a unit at other stores compared to $3.99  at Traders, shopping can be fun again.”

Traders buys from all over the country, offering a unique inventory that can’t be found in other local stores.

“When someone comes into Traders, they may not be able to fill their entire grocery list,” Landau said, “but with whatever they find we can help them cut their grocery bill in half.”

Shoppers are starting to come from as far as Las Vegas, Nevada, Landau said, and Salt Lake City,  just to shop our store.

Traders is attentive to customer happiness and has a 30-day return policy, during which items accompanied by a receipt can be returned with no questions asked.

I have shopped this store since it opened. I love it. The staff is so nice and I love the prices! To everyone who talks about being environmentally friendly this is one way to do it that matters BECAUSE you are buying and using things that would other wise get thrown out and wasted. Think of the resources (water, land, energy etc.) it took to produce those goods that are now out of date but are still completely good. Yes I do pay some attention to the dates because there is a time at which things do get stale or rancid but they are good for a long time past their pull date. I know because I eat them and cook with them and use them. I also pay attention to the prices because some times I can find a sale on something in a regular store that is the same or cheaper than Traders. It does happen. I am also careful about badly dented cans. This store is a gift to the community. What a great way to really help people with limited income live and provide for themselves WITHOUT getting a hand out or getting the government involved. Local, private enterprise, what a great way to go!

oh yea, why would we want government assistance–just let them eat expired food!

It’s good enough for me fun bag. I am not recommending anything I am not doing myself. Are you too good to eat a box of crackers that is 1 month past it’s date? So you would rather see that good food wasted?

I agree with you, NBNM. Stores such as this are a great way to shop to save money, help out locally, and reduce waste.
