WELLS, Nev. — A 1-year-old girl is in the custody of the Department of Child Family Services after the two people she was traveling with Sunday died from injuries sustained during a single-vehicle rollover on Interstate 80 near Wells, Nevada.
At approximately 1:10 a.m., a man, identified as 38-year-old Richard Beaumont, of Logan, Utah, lost control of a 1995 Ford Explorer he was driving east on I-80 over the Wells overpass, according to a press statement issued by the Nevada Highway Patrol.
For reasons unknown to troopers, Beaumont went off the left road edge and hit a guardrail, the statement said. He then steered the Explorer to the right, causing it to cross both travel lanes before he overcorrected and rolled the vehicle.
Beaumont and a 20-year-old passenger, identified as Dawha Loughney, also of Logan, were not wearing their seat belts, the statement said. Both were ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries at the scene.
The third passenger, a 1-year-old girl, was not secured in a child safety seat, according to the statement, and was also ejected. The child safety seat was found on the right dirt shoulder.
The girl sustained no reported injuries, according to the statement, and was released to the Department of Child Family Services.
