ST. GEORGE — A 78-year-old man apparently suffered a diabetic episode Thursday morning while driving Southern Parkway in St. George where he veered off the road, through a barbed wire fence and ended up in a drainage ditch.
About 9:15 a.m., Utah Highway Patrol received report of a car that had driven off the road, Trooper Joe Pastor said. The driver was originally heading east on Southern Parkway just past the airport turnoff.
The driver apparently became confused and turned his car around, Pastor said, whereupon heading west, the car crossed into the eastbound lanes and then off the side of the road. The car ran over a barbed wire fence and ended up in a stone drainage ditch.
The driver appears to have suffered a diabetic episode, Pastor said, causing him confusion and the crash.
Gold Cross Ambulance paramedics responded to the scene, checked out the driver and transported him to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George.
Traffic on Southern Parkway was not affected but, due to the terrain, it took over two hours for the car to be pulled from the ditch and towed from the scene.
