SPRINGDALE – The public is invited to a lecture and and stargazing event Tuesday at 9 p.m. at the Canyon Community Center, 126 Lion Blvd. in Springdale.
The night sky event will begin with a lecture by Phillip Moore, a science teacher at Hurricane High School, who will present “Stories of Constellations and Star Gazing.”
At 9:30 p.m., the event will move outdoors for stargazing led by professor Samuel Tobbler of Dixie State University. Three or four telescopes will be available, and stargazing will continue until 10:30 p.m. or 11 p.m.
The event is the third in this year’s series of Night Sky events, Associate Town Planner Moumita Kundu said, which will continue on a monthly basis through September. Springdale held seven or eight Night Sky events in 2014, Kundu said.
“They were really successful, so we decided to do it this year as well,” she said. “These events are done to create more awareness about the night sky and outdoor lighting … so that people can enjoy the night sky and get educated about the protection of the night sky and outdoor lighting.”

The town of Springdale pays a lot of attention to the night skies, she said, and has an outdoor lighting ordinance to protect the area’s dark night sky.
Night Sky events are scheduled according to the lunar cycle and the availability of speakers, Kundu said, and are announced in the town’s newsletter and on the Springdale Facebook page and website.
