HURRICANE – Police discovered more than they might have expected last Monday when they responded to a theft report at an automotive store in Hurricane, eventually locating four suspects with alleged drugs and an array of firearms and other stolen property taken from a cabin in Swains Creek.
“It was just good dedicated police work by those officers involved, kind of going above and beyond gathering information and evidence and obtaining the ability to search those things and obtain the information they did led to a good arrest,” Hurricane City Police Sgt. Brandon Buell said, adding that the arrest helped to get some drugs and guns off the street and out of the hands of convicted criminals.
The incident began when officers responded to a report of theft at Rare Form Automotive and Collision Repair, 346 W. State Street, in Hurricane, according to a probable cause statement written by Hurricane City Police Officer Justin Gray in support of the arrests.
It was reported, and later confirmed through surveillance footage, that two men and two women were seen inside the business when one of the men allegedly went behind the counter and took $1,582 from the cash draw, the statement said. The four then left the business and walked to the Travelodge down the street.
When officers arrived at the Travelodge, they located one of the men, identified as 33-year-old Jeremy Richard Higgins of Las Vegas, in the parking lot and detained him.
Police then knocked on the hotel room door where a witness said they saw the other three people go, according to the statement. One of the women, identified as Alexis Nicole Dill, 19, of Summerlin, Nevada, opened the door.
Dill admitted that her boyfriend, 31-year-old Jason Michael Killman of Las Vegas, had taken money from the cash register at the business, the statement said, but said it was only around $100.
Police found the other woman, 44-year-old Coreyann Beres, of Las Vegas, in the hotel room bathroom.
Both women denied knowing where Killman or the cash was located, the statement said. Police were led to believe Killman had fled on foot, and were unable to locate him.
The Police Department then obtained a search warrant to search the hotel room and Higgins’ vehicle, parked in the parking lot of Rare Form Collision.
During a search of the room, the statement said, officers discovered methamphetamine, a glass pipe, hydrocodone pills, and … just the man they were looking for.
“I proceeded to turn the mattress over to continue my search and observed a male under the bed,” Gray wrote in the statement. “I drew my weapon and ordered the male to show me his hands.”
The man was detained and identified as Killman.
During a search of Higgins’ vehicle, officers located an AK-47 rifle, a Browning 9-millimeter pistol, and a double-barreled, 12-gauge shotgun, the statement said, along with ammunition for all three firearms.
In addition to the firearms inside the vehicle, the statement said, officers located power tools, two televisions and bolt cutters consistent with tools commonly used to commit burglaries.
Officers discovered the firearms, power tools and televisions were stolen from a Swains Creek cabin in Iron County. The value of the property is estimated between $1,500 and $5,000.
The four Nevadans were arrested and booked into the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility.
Killman was charged with four second-degree felonies for receiving stolen property and possession of a weapon by a restricted person; four third-degree felonies for theft, receiving stolen property and drug possession; and two class B misdemeanors for possession of burglary tools and drug paraphernalia.
Higgins was charged with three second-degree felonies for receiving stolen property; two third-degree felonies for receiving stolen property and possession of a weapon by a restricted person; and a class B misdemeanor for possession of burglary tools.
Both men were also discovered to have outstanding warrants for their arrest.
Dill was charged with three second-degree felonies for receiving stolen property; four third-degree felonies for theft, receiving stolen property and drug possession; a class A misdemeanor for obstruction of justice; and two class B misdemeanors for possession of burglary tools and drug paraphernalia.
Beres was charged with three second-degree felonies for receiving stolen property; two third-degree felonies for receiving stolen property and possession of a weapon by a restricted person; a class A misdemeanor for obstruction of justice; and a class B misdemeanor for possession of burglary tools.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
