VIRGIN — In order to complete critical reconstruction of Kolob Terrace Road, the existing roadwork schedule will be expanded to include Friday afternoon closures from 1-4 p.m. starting Aug. 1.

The Federal Highway Administration, the project contractor and the National Park Service jointly determined that adding work time on Friday afternoons was essential to keeping the project on schedule.

“This project is improving the safety of both residents and visitors that use the Kolob Terrace Road,” Zion National Park Superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh said. “The road will be completely rehabilitated, from the base to the asphalt surface.”

This major reconstruction project began in March and significant progress has been made, according to a release by the National Park Service. Almost all of the excavation work and removal of the old road surface has been completed. The road is being widened in certain areas, including Maloney Hill and Black Canyon.

Additionally, supporting walls will be reinforced and culverts will be added. Construction is expected to be complete Oct. 31.

Travelers must wait for a pilot car to drive through the construction zone during daylight hours. The road will be dirt or graded gravel in the work sections, and the surface may be uneven at times. Travelers should drive slowly, obey directions and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.

People visiting Springdale, the main Zion Canyon and east portions of Zion National Park via the park’s south or east entrances, who are camping, accessing the shuttle system, staying at the Zion Lodge or in the town of Springdale, will not be in the construction zone. Visitors accessing the Kolob Canyons section of the park from Interstate 15 will likewise not be in the construction area.
