ST. GEORGE — The combination of speed, a curve and loose gravel were too much for a driver of a Honda Fit Monday evening as he slipped off the road and ended up hitting a brick wall and two utility boxes.
The roadway on Mall Drive just north of 110 south in St. George was being chip-sealed, and the driver was coming around a curve in the road at an estimated 45 mph, St. George Police Sgt. Dave Williams said.
The tires on the Honda Fit started to slip on the gravel, causing the driver to overcorrect and the small car to leave the roadway, before bouncing off a brick wall and crashing through two utility boxes, destroying one and knocking the other off its foundation.
Airbags in the vehicle deployed during the collision and the 17-year-old driver was wearing his seat belt. The driver was treated at the scene by Gold Cross Ambulance for minor injuries, Williams said, and his parents showed up and elected to take him to the hospital.
The driver was issued a citation for speed too fast for conditions.
While the Honda was severely damaged in the mishap, no utility disruptions were noted in the area.
Williams reminded drivers that chip sealing is being performed on Washington County roads.
“Drive the advisory speed limit,” Williams said. “Give yourself more room than usual to make sure you can stop; and you need to be aware of the road conditions.”
