ST. GEORGE — A wedding is not unusual in Southern Utah, but Michael Deuel and Crystal Campbell’s exchange of wedding vows Monday was special and rare as the ceremony was held at Switchpoint Community Resource Center.
The two said they fell in love six months ago, and have helped each other get through some hard times.
Because of drug addiction, both Deuel and Campbell have been in and out of homeless shelters; Deuel for the last two years. The couple has been staying at Switchpoint for the past two weeks.
“I love this guy with all my heart,” Campbell said. “I really don’t know where I’d be without him.”
The couple was surrounded by a few family members and some close friends for the ceremony held Monday afternoon in the multipurpose room with former Washington County 5th District Judge James L. Shumate presiding.
Switchpoint provided the couple with a marriage license, a wedding cake and refreshments for guests. The bride wore a purple dress and the groom wore a black suit with a purple tie to match.
Now as a married couple, the future is looking bright, and Switchpoint is helping them get back on their feet.
“I don’t want to live that life anymore. I’ve been through so much,” Deuel said.
Compared to other shelters, Switchpoint has helped the couple feel at home and comfortable, Campbell said.
“Switchpoint has really changed us for the better,” she said.
Both Deuel and Campbell have been drug-free for several months, they said, and Deuel has a new job roofing houses.
The happy couple is working towards saving money to buy a car. In five years, they said, they see themselves with a home of their own and possibly starting a family. Although the couple doesn’t have much, they have each other.
“Simple things are just fine for us, as long as it’s ours,” Deuel said. “As long as we make it a home.”
