HURRICANE — A 42-year-old woman was arrested Thursday after allegedly having her friends help her hotwire a man’s motor home parked in a Hurricane trailer park, before taking the motor home to Beaver and living in it there.
Officers responded to a report of theft after a man reported his motor home had been stolen, according to a probable cause statement written by Hurricane City Police Officer Kacen Gubler in support of the arrest.
The man said in November 2014, he told Kristina Lynn Ryder she could live in the motor home until she could find a place to live, the statement said, and he had not talked to her since.
On Tuesday, when the man went to the trailer court where his motor home should have been parked, he discovered his motor home was gone.
The man suspected Ryder had taken the motor home but said she had not contacted him and she would not answer his calls or call him back, according to the statement. The man also said he had the only keys to the ignition of the motor home and was unsure how it was moved without “hot wiring it.”
Officers interviewed Ryder and she told them she had taken the motor home and was living in a trailer park in Beaver, according to the statement. Ryder said she never had an agreement with the man and had never heard from him, and she assumed she could live there.
Ryder said she was starting to get behind on her payments to park the motor home at the trailer park in Hurricane and decided she needed to leave, according to the statement. She also admitted to never contacting or talking to the man about moving his motor home.
“(Ryder) admitted she had some friends take apart the ignition so she could move the motor home,” Gubler wrote in the statement. “I asked (Ryder) if she ever thought she was ‘breaking the law?’ (Ryder) stated she had a ‘feeling’ it was wrong. (Ryder) stated she knew she had done something wrong.”
Ryder admitted she was paying for the motor home to be parked in a Beaver campground, Gubler said, showing that she had the money to pay for the motor home in Hurricane and did not have to move it approximately 100 miles away.
Ryder was arrested and booked into the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility.
She was charged with a second-degree felony for theft by receiving stolen property, and a class B misdemeanor for criminal mischief.
Ryder’s bail pending trial stands at $5,000 bond.
Ryder made her initial court appearance on Friday. She is scheduled to make her next court appearance on June 15.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
