Actor Peter Murnik in studio; Granite Flats season 3 headed to Netflix

ST GEORGE —TV actor Peter Murnik said BYUtv’s “Granite Flats” is headed down a road that no other BYUtv series has ever gone before: Netflix

“Granite Flats” is the first-ever scripted Cold War drama series from the cable network BYUtv. All three seasons of the show are available now for on-demand viewing at BYUtv’s website and other streaming outlets.

In April, the Netflix deal was announced, making “Granite Flats” the first show that is currently on the air on another network to launch a new season on Netflix.

“It’s a huge compliment to the show, I think, that the work that we’ve all done over the course of the past three seasons that Netflix actually approached BYUtv and approached the producers and said they wanted to feature the show on Netflix and out to all their streaming avenues,” Murnik said.

The goal is to get the programming out there and get people familiar with the show. Netflix will ultimately expand the viewership, Murnik said.

The show is focused around a town called Granite Flats during the 1960s. The motivation behind the show was to round out family entertainment that parents and children could both relate to. The show is filmed primarily in the Salt Lake City area and the Utah Valley.

“I think there is a lot of regional pride to filming in Utah,” Murnik said. “And it’s well-founded because the people that work here, and the people that have relocated here from Hollywood, they want to do very fine work, but it’s Hollywood production values without the Hollywood attitude.”

Murnik plays the character of Hershel Jenkins, a former military sergeant and a single parent to Wallace Jenkins. Hershel deals with ghosts of the past and is forced to reconcile his new life with the one he left behind.

Now in its third season, Granite Flats continues to captivate viewers through intense scenarios and compelling characters. “Friendships and loyalties continue to be challenged, everyone is full of secrets and nothing is what it seems to be,” according to a news release.

The show pays special attention to detail and really succeeds in captivating the time period.

“We have unbelievable cinematographer and Reed Smoot and unbelievable production staff,” Murnik said. “And beautiful set dressing and unbelievable sets and props, and I love the cars, personally, but the production quality of the show overall, and the writing and the acting, it’s as good as anything you’ll see on TV.”

A fourth season hasn’t yet been confirmed, but Murnik has high hopes that one will emerge.

“That’s the $64,000 question,” he said. “I certainly hope there is. And we’re hoping to hear something very, very soon – you know, now that Netflix is on board and I know all the actors want to come back and do more. And I’ve absolutely fallen in love with Utah, and I’ve fallen in love with working on the project; so hopefully Season 4 is coming down the pipeline.”

Granite Flats will continue to air on BYUtv’s network, but season three won’t air until October.
