HURRICANE – Police have released the name of a 14-year-old boy who was killed after being hit by a truck Wednesday night in Hurricane.
The boy has been identified as Gavin Pryor, a Hurricane City resident who attended Hurricane Middle School.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out (to) the families and friends of those who were involved and knew Gavin,” the Hurricane Police Department said in a press statement issued Thursday afternoon.
Counseling is being offered at the Hurricane High School Counseling Office Friday from 8-10 a.m. for those affected by the tragedy.
“The school wants to assure that they will continue to offer support for students and staff as long as the need exists,” the statement said.
Pryor was walking with three of his friends shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday on 700 West on the east side of the roadway when a Toyota Tacoma truck traveling north on 700 West, driven by a 26-year-old man, drifted to the side of the road where the four juveniles were walking.
Three of the juveniles were able to get out of the way of the Toyota tuck, but Pryor was not. He was struck by the truck and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

STG News should be a little more unbiased in their reporting.
Granted, the accident was a tragedy, but think of how this event is being portrayed before all the facts are in: the kid was hit SIX FEET from the SIDEWALK! And that’s after the kid ‘allegedly’ tried to get out of the street- WHERE THE TRUCK BELONGS.
Six feet from a sidewalk is well withing the vehicles lane, so this driver did not ‘swerve’ into him.
It was a series of unfortunate events, that resulted in a bad outcome. 14 year old kids don’t belong in the middle of the road, at 10:45 at night, on a poorly lit street,
and the driver should have been more careful while driving, yes.
But to skew the reports that he swerved toward the kid when it had been reported he was struck 6 feet from the sidewalk, thus in the middle of the traffic lane, is poor reporting.
Think of the poor guy that has to live with this for the rest of his life, and they way he sees the news portraying him right now.
Please note: I do not know anyone involved, but I do know that stretch of road. There is VERY limited visibility there at that time of night. Those kids saw that truck long before he saw them, yet they stayed in the road.

He said he drifted, but not out of his lane. The proof is in the fact that he has not been charged with leaving his lane. You know cops love to write those tickets, as evidenced by STG news coverage of accidents. SIX FEET from the sidewalk is not out of his lane.
Driver was a fool for saying anything to the cops at all. ‘CAN and WILL be used against you’ means WILL BE USED AGAINST YOU, and not the news is already biased against him.

So why was it reported over the radio today that officer Brandon Buell stated “to remind people to walk on the sidewalk rather than in the street”. Hurricane has a poor reputation for not having sidewalks on the majority of their streets. Yes there was sidewalks where the young man was at but only on one side of the street not on both. There are several streets in Hurricane that have no sidewalks. During and just after a rainstorm the road is the only place a person can walk with out getting all muddy . Besides in some parts of Hurricane the side of the roads are so bad with rocks weeds dirt that it is uncomfortable to walk there. So people especially children walk in the road. Especially in the older parts of town in residential areas. Some of their streets are a real joke.
No excuse for breaking the law and walking in traffic, riccie. For the record, that part of the sidewalk is wide and clear. They were just being dumb kids.
