ST. GEORGE – A veterans convention held Saturday in St. George will offer benefit information, free heart testing and a chance for veterans to have their personal “in-country” experiences recorded for posterity.
The Veterans Information Convention will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Abbey Inn, 1129 S. Bluff St. in St. George.
Information will be offered regarding benefits for veterans, their families and the general public, Vietnam Veterans of America representative Erwin Aguayo said.
Many benefits are available to veterans, their spouses and families that people are not aware of, Aguayo said.
Saturday’s event will include 28 manned tables from each branch of the military, each of the nine veterans organizations, and the three Veterans Administration facilities that serve the 11,000 veterans in the St. George area, Aguayo said.
The information offered will be aimed at veterans, relatives of veterans and anyone thinking about military service.
“That’s why we are opening it up to the public,” Aguayo said.
Organizers will also host a booth at which veterans can tell their stories, to be recorded for posterity.
“We want to get the stories of the veterans,” Aguayo said. “We want to put together a book about their in-country experience. … They are incredible stories.”
Booths will also be manned by local businesses, civic groups and health organizations that support veterans.
In addition to information, attendees will be able to get a heart disease test through the Guard a Heart Foundation, using the protein unstable lesion signature, or PULS method, which can predict a possible heart attack.
The Guard a Heart Foundation is a nationally known and recognized nonprofit organization focused on heart disease. The PULS test method, offered to veterans and the public at the event, is the most advance heart testing available and can predict potential heart attacks in people, Aguayo said.
The event is sponsored and organized by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Southern Utah Chapter 961. The mission statement of the VVA is “Never again will one generation of veterans abandon another.”
