GRAND CANYON — Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument fire managers are planning to conduct prescribed burning near Mount Dellenbaugh and Twin Point in late May if weather and fuel conditions allow. Preparation, ignition and monitoring of the higher elevation burns (Valley Meadow, 211 acres and Twin Creek, 429 acres) are expected to begin on May 30 and continue through June 13.
Both prescribed burns will be ignited using a Plastic Sphere Dispenser from a helicopter to perform a broadcast burn. The treatments are intended to restore fire to fire-adapted ecosystems, thwart the encroachment of juniper and pinyon pine, encourage the recruitment of native grass and forb species and increase native plant diversity.
Prescribed fires must meet certain weather-related and environmental factors prior to ignition. National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management fire staff will manage and monitor the prescribed fire activity, and smoke may be present for several days in this remote area. Smoke emissions will be managed in accordance with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality regulations.
No road closures are anticipated, but public access may be restricted during ignition and periods of active fire spread to ensure safety. Signs will be posted to notify the public. Please use caution when traveling in the area of the fire.
