Lee amendment preserves National Guard Apache Fleet

WASHINGTON, D. C. — In the Senate Armed Services Committee, Sen. Mike Lee successfully added an amendment this week to the National Defense Authorization Act that preserves the National Guard’s Apache helicopter fleet.

Lee’s amendment to the Army’s Aviation Restructuring Initiative extends the prohibition on AH-64 Apache helicopter transfers out of the National Guard for FY 2016.

“The hardworking men and women of the National Guard’s 1-211th Attack Helicopter Battalion have served with honor and distinction in Iraq and Afghanistan,” Lee said. “The extension provided by my amendment will give Congress and the Department of Defense more time to ensure the National Guard’s resources are used in the most effective and beneficial way to protect our national security.”

Lee continues to view sequestration for the Defense Department as a misguided and ultimately unsustainable mechanism, according to a press release from his office. He also believes that Congress needs to find a better way to protect the freedom of Americans through reductions in overall federal spending, smart reforms to the Defense Department and better aligning our international engagements with U.S economic and security priorities.

Sen. Lee is back on my “bad” list. DoD is trying to use its funds wisely while members of Congress like Sen. Lee are busy protecting inefficient military bases, units and equipment that are not needed. Pork barrel legislation from a Republican who claims he wants to “…protect the freedom of Americans through reductions in overall federal spending….” Sadly, virtually all of them do this kind of thing routinely.

Your left leaning posture gave you away here so Senator Lee will not lose too much sleep knowing that he lost one of Bammie’s sheep.

You are likely the only person on this website who thinks I’m “left leaning.” Real liberals on this site along with those who see themselves as centrists will get a chuckle out of seeing me portrayed as a “left leaning Bammie sheep.” You’ve brightened their day…and mine.

Big Guy….would like to have a reasonable adultlike debate about your claims. If so…what is the basis of your claim that Sen. Lee (who by the way is not even one of my senators) is protecting inefficient military bases, units, and equipment. How do you know? Frankly, on the contrary, I wish my state’s senator had the wisdom that he does. I’d submit that DOD is NOT trying to use its funds wisely…and this is coming from a senior military officer who has been around the block or two for quite some time.
