At about 6:30 p.m., St. George Police and other agencies responded to the accident, which occurred on Red Hills Parkway on the stretch of roadway between the interchange at Bluff Street and Skyline Drive.

Responders found a Mazda Protege that had flipped onto its top and landed on the median. A 22-year-old woman had been at the wheel.

“She reported – and there’s no evidence to believe otherwise – that she had just worked a long day and fell asleep,” St. George Police Lt. Joseph Hartman said.

The woman woke up after dozing off, and she overcorrected and swerved to the right, hitting a delineator post, Hartman said. She then overcorrected to the left, hit the median and rolled the car.

The driver received some scrapes and bruises and was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center by Gold Cross Ambulance as a precaution. The Mazda had to be towed from the scene.

No other cars or individuals were involved in the incident.

In addition to St. George Police and Gold Cross, St. George Fire also responded to the incident.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

Ed. note: Day of incident corrected.
