Sand Hollow Sailing Classic breezes into Southern Utah, public welcome

HURRICANE — Hobie Fleet 941 and the Sand Hollow Yacht Club are bringing their third annual Sand Hollow Sailing Classic to Sand Hollow Reservoir in Hurricane Saturday and Sunday. Spectators and boaters are welcome to come watch the regatta and stay for the evening entertainment.

The event is free, except for Sand Hollow State Park entrance fees.

“We expect the participation of top National Hobie Cat sailors from across the Southwest from Southern California, Arizona, Southern Nevada and Utah,” Hobie Fleet 941 Commodore Raul Hevia said. “We please ask you come and support the event by coming and participate whether you are racing or not in the different activities.”

Boat owners are encouraged to come support the races and sail around the area. A discreet distance from racers at racing time is required, and boat owners are asked to not cross the start or finish line if not registered to race.

Races

Competing classes include Hobie 16, Hobie 18 and Hobie Wave.

There will be three-five races on both Saturday and Sunday, subject to weather conditions.

“The best action will be between noon and 4 p.m.,” Hevia said; “wind starts to pick up sometime after 10:30 a.m. and continues until about 4:30 p.m.”

If you are coming to watch the races, your best seats are on either the West Dam, close to where the “A-Mark” buoy will be placed, or on the southwest shore. If winds are blowing from the usual south/southwest, Hevia said, the best seat is on the West Dam – just look for the large cylindrical orange float.

Trophies to the winners are scheduled for presentation about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Sunset show at the lake

Michael Hargis, who has shared the stage with The Oakridge Boys, The Drifters and Chubby Checker, will perform his signature pop-country repertoire with singing and dancing on the beach starting around 8 p.m. at the South Primitive Camping area Saturday. Hargis will make you laugh, sing, dance and romance your companion, the Yacht Club’s press release said.

Hobie Fleet 941’s own Hal Stead will also perform his repertoire of pop ballads, singing and guitar playing. Singing along is welcome.

The show is free, but tips are encouraged. Hargis is a fellow sailor and club member and is not charging the club his usual show fee.
