HURRICANE — While responding to a fight in a Hurricane shopping center Monday, police arrested a woman after discovering she was in possession of a stolen driver’s license and finance card that the woman said she found inside a car parked in a Las Vegas salvage yard.
Officers responded to a disorderly call at the Hurricane City Wal-Mart, located at 180 N. 3400 West, where a witness reported a man and woman were fighting inside the store, according to a probable cause statement written by Hurricane City Police Officer Kurt Yates in support of the arrest.
Police located the woman, identified as 35-year-old Jennifer Lee Higginson, of Hurricane, who was allegedly involved in the disagreement inside the store.
When officers ran Higginson’s information, they learned she had an outstanding warrant for her arrest issued by the Washington City Justice Court.
Higginson let officers search her purse, according to the statement. Inside the purse, officers located a Las Vegas woman’s Nevada driver’s license and Wells Fargo finance card.
“(Higginson) told me she had located the Debit Card and (the woman’s) Nevada Drivers License in a car located in a salvage yard in North Las Vegas,” Yates wrote in the statement. “(Higginson) told me she did not know what to do with the items.”
A Las Vegas Police officer responded to the address listed on the Nevada driver’s license and the officer received confirmation the items were stolen, the statement said. The Las Vegas woman told police her wallet, containing her ID and Wells Fargo finance card, had been taken from a shopping cart at a store in Las Vegas while she was shopping.
The woman was able to identify the wallet and its contents, according to the statement of probable cause, and said the Wells Fargo card had been used to make an unauthorized purchase in Las Vegas.
Higginson was arrested and booked into the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility.
She was charged with a third-degree felony for unlawful acquisition of a finance card, and a class B misdemeanor for theft by receiving stolen property.
She was released from custody on a $5,583 bond and is scheduled to make her initial court appearance on May 18.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
