Hurricane Valley Choir honors armed forces at spring concert

HURRICANE — The Hurricane Valley Choir will present their annual spring concert in honor of Armed Forces Day Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Hurricane Fine Arts Building located at 93 S. 100 West in Hurricane. Admission is free and all are invited.

The choir said it is grateful to American Legion Post 100 who will open the concert posting the colors. This concert is reflective of America and includes a variety of American music. Soloists include Karlene Young, Lyle Wood, Layne Garner, Rick Frost, Barbara Baker, Kelli Carter, Melinda Warth, Jed Gardner and Renee Garner. The concert is expected to be time well spent with family and friends.

Musical styles will range from folk songs like the always beautiful “Shenandoah” to the stirring “Seize the Day” from the musical “Newsies.” Spirituals include “’Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning,” “Ain’t No Windin’ in the Road” and an amazing arrangement of “Go Down Moses.” The traditionally instrumental piece “Bugler’s Holiday” keeps the choir moving and will be sure to please the crowd.

“Homeward Bound” arranged by Mack Wilberg, incorporates a four-hand accompaniment with Rebecca Stevens lending her talents to the second piano part. The beautiful love theme from the PBS series “The Civil War,” “Ashokan Farewell” is a favorite. John Rutter’s moving “Gaelic Blessing,” Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” and the choir’s traditional rendition of “A Tribute to the Armed Forces” bring the concert to the final number.

The choir was created in October 2007 by the Hurricane Valley Arts Alliance to offer the opportunity for area singers, from high school to adult, to participate in a community choir. The choir was originally directed by Warren Larsen, but changed directors when Larsen moved out of the area. June Jeffery, a member of the choir, will conduct this concert. Camille McCausland is the choir director and accompanist.
