ZION NATIONAL PARK – Snowy conditions led to an accident on Kolob Terrace Road in Zion National Park Friday, temporarily closing the road.

A vehicle with a trailer slid off the road near Black Canyon a little after 11 a.m., Zion National Park Public Information Officer Aly Baltrus said.

The vehicle was a 10-wheel dump truck pulling a trailer, Washington County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Shauna Jones said.

The initial call came in at 11:07 from a Zion National Park maintenance worker, Baltrus said. The accident closed the road, but it was reopened about 1:30 p.m. A tow truck was used to get the vehicle and trailer back onto the road.

Poor road conditions are believed to have contributed to the accident, Baltrus said.

“They have 3 inches of snow up there, so it’s passable but kind of mushy,” she said.

Kolob Canyons Road at the north entrance to Zion National Park was also closed for a few hours Friday, due to about 4 inches of snow in the area, Baltrus said.

Major construction is occurring on Kolob Terrace Road, and although bad weather had stopped work, crews were available to repair damage to the road surface caused by the accident.

“Because of the rain and snow, the construction folks were not working but had been periodically checking on the road and were prepared to regrade, if necessary,” Baltrus said.

Baltrus was not aware of any injuries caused by the accident.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other authorities and may not contain the full scope of findings.
