SANTA CLARA — A Washington City man, arrested early Sunday morning after burglarizing vehicles in Santa Clara and threatening a resident with a handgun, faces a new second-degree felony charge Tuesday for theft after it was discovered the handgun he used in Sunday’s incident was stolen during a previous crime.
Keith Harrold Bergman III was incarcerated at the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility Sunday, charged with one second-degree felony for using a concealed weapon in commission of a violent felony; a third-degree felony for aggravated assault; and seven misdemeanor charges for vehicle burglary, failure to stop at an officer’s command, interference with an arresting officer and alcohol-related offenses. Tuesday, he was newly charged with another second-degree felony for theft of a firearm.
Sunday’s charges stemmed from Bergman’s arrest after a Santa Clara resident was awakened by a noise in his driveway just before 3 a.m. Sunday and discovered Bergman burglarizing vehicles.
Bergman allegedly pulled a gun on the resident when the resident confronted him.
Responding officers found a loaded .22-caliber handgun on Bergman. The gun’s serial number was then traced back to a Washington City vehicle burglary, during which the handgun had been stolen, according to a probable cause statement written by Ivins-Santa Clara Public Safety Officer Jason Shafer in support of the arrest.
Bail amount for the new charge was set at $10,000.
Bergman is scheduled to make his next court appearance on May 11.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
