Man runs car into trailer home, arrested for DUI

ST. GEORGE – A 29-year-old man who crashed his car into the side of a trailer home Thursday was arrested for alleged DUI and drug possession.

Emergency responders were sent to the Canyon View Mobile Home Park at 1450 N. Dixie Downs Drive around 7:40 a.m. after it was reported a car had slammed into the side of one of the trailer homes.

“The car came straight down 1465 North eastbound (across the street), went across Dixie Downs Drive at a high rate of speed and impacted the trailer and pushed the trailer about two feet off its foundation,” St. George Police Sgt. Craig Harding said at the scene Thursday morning.

The driver, identified as David Colby Brereton, of St. George, was reported to be convulsing and had a syringe in his lap, according to a probable cause statement in support of his arrest. The syringe was photographed and later collected by police, as was a small piece of cotton.

The syringe was described in the statement as having brown liquid residue inside of it, and the piece of cotton was stained dark brown. The residue and stain are believed by police to be associated with heroin.

Brereton had to be extricated from the car by firefighters. Though he was conscious at the time, the responding officer who wrote the probable case statement said Brereton told him “he did not remember the accident, where he was, or where he was going.”

Brereton also told the officer that he hadn’t been drinking or taking medications. He also allegedly admitted to having used opiates and heroin in the past, yet said he wasn’t currently using the drugs.

Officers on scene did not make Brereton undergo a field sobriety test as he had to be taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center for a medical check. He was listed as being in serious condition by police in a statement released Thursday following the accident.

No one else was injured in the incident, and the owner of the trailer was not home when the incident occurred.

Prior to he being transported to the hospital, the police told Brereton he was under arrest for DUI and wanted to take a blood sample. Brereton refused, resulting in police getting a warrant for it, according to the probable cause statement.

After being medically cleared at the hospital, Brereton was taken into custody and booked into the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility on a third-degree felony count of possession of a controlled substance, and three class B misdemeanors for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, operating a vehicle without insurance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Brereton was previously arrested in February by Washington City Police for intoxication and vehicle burglary, to which he ultimately pleaded guilty in court as a part of a plea deal; he was then placed on probation, according to court records.

Well at least they didn’t have to give him pain killers. What a waste of life.
