ST. GEORGE – Entrepreneurs will gather at Outlier Labs in St. George, Thursday through Saturday for the first “Startup Weekend” to be held in St. George, offering entrepreneurs an opportunity to brainstorm ideas and build a business in a single weekend session; new registrants are welcome until 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
“No talk, all action. Launch a startup in 54 hours,” is the objective of the global Startup Weekends network, with events held all over the world. “Startup Weekend St. George” will be held at Outlier Labs, 1071 E. 100 South, Building C, in St. George.
Participants, who may include developers, designers, marketers, product managers and startup enthusiasts, will collaborate and brainstorm with a team, develop a business, prototype or product … and possibly launch a new business.
It starts with a pitch. At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, participants will pitch their ideas to others in attendance. Everyone can present their own ideas, or pick one of the other ideas.
“We’re inviting all entrepreneurs to come out on Thursday, the first night, and pitch any ideas they have for a business, an app, a service,” Outlier Labs founder and CEO Ever Gonzalez said. “They’ll have 60 seconds.
“Everybody else can either join forces, build a team; and then they have 54 hours to either put that app together, or build a company or some sort of service.”
On Friday and Saturday, experts, business coaches and mentors will be available to help participants build their ideas. Saturday night, a panel of judges will pick the top three winners, and give away cash and prizes.
“Eighty percent of the people that participate in a ‘Startup Weekend’ continue with their business idea after the fact,” Gonzalez said.
“Startup Weekend St. George” is co-hosted and sponsored by Outlier Labs and Utah Science, Technology and Research, or USTAR; additional sponsors include Dixie State University’s Business Resource Center and Seed Dixie, among others.
Outlier Labs is a physical co-working space, where for $50 per month, entrepreneurs can have a place to work in a professional environment, as well as finding mentors, business advice and new contacts. The associated Outlier Magazine publishes a podcast “Outlier On Air,” which is in the top 10 in Apple’s Business, Tech and Education podcasts, Gonzalez said.
About 80 entrepreneurs are expected for the event, from St. George, Cedar City, Provo, Salt Lake City, Ogden, Las Vegas – and a team from Mexico.
Registration is open up until the event starts Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The cost for the event is $99; or $49 for students, $75 for participants from Cedar City northward. To register, go here.
