ST. GEORGE — With Snow Canyon’s Heather Prestwich and Cedar’s Marin Whitney pitching well, it was going to take something unusual to break a 2-2 tie Friday afternoon between two of the region’s top teams. Stealing home, that would qualify.

Technically, Mada Mooring scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch. But the speedy SC lead-off hitter didn’t need much of an opening to sprint home for the game-ending play.

Mooring had fouled off three straight pitches before lacing a 1-2 pitch to left field for a double to lead off the bottom of the seventh. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Nikenna Durante and then scored the winning run when a 1-0 pitch to Shelbee Hutchings got away from the Cedar catcher.

Mooring had three of Snow Canyon’s eight hits in the game. Sonya Hardy had two as well. Prestwich held Cedar to five hits and one walk and overcame four errors by her teammates.

Javlyn Weaver had two of the hits for Cedar, while Whitney overcame a rough first inning (three hits, two runs) to silence the Warriors until Mooring’s winning run.

With the win, SC preserves its perch atop Region 9 with an 8-1 record. Canyon View, which beat Dixie 2-0, is second with a 6-2 record and Cedar drops to third with the loss, falling to 5-3.

In the Falcons victory, Taylor Wheelwright allowed just one hit to the Lady Flyers in the complete-game victory. Summer Simkins was almost as impressive, holding Canyon View scoreless until the fifth inning. The Falcons pushed both runs across in that inning with the help of a Kaitlyn DeLange double.

Snow Canyon and Canyon View meet in 10 days (Apr. 28) at CV.

No score was reported for the Pine View-Desert Hills game.
