ST. GEORGE – So much for home-field advantage.

Snow Canyon Warriors avenged its earlier home loss to Pine View with a 2-0 victory at the Panthers home field Friday night on a balmy St. George evening.

“People think of us as an offensive team,” said Warrior assistant coach Steve Overfeldt. “But our defense is good too. Our back three shut down their attacks and Jose Comacho had a great game at goalie.”

The Warrior offense was in attack mode from the very beginning. The first shot on goal came from Casey Monson just five minutes into the game. The shot went wide right.

At the 31:50 mark, Pine View got its first shot on goal. Midfielder Michael Cardenas’ shot from 20 yards out was caught by Comacho.

Two minutes later Kevin Guevara-Chillin found a streaking Axel Nino down the right side. Nino’s shot was broken up on a sliding tackle from Panther defenseman Easton Householder.

With 20:15 left in the first half, Panther forward Kalob Dudley got loose on a breakaway down the left side but his shot went wide left.

With seven minutes remaining in the half, Snow Canyon had a flurry of shot attempts. The first came from Daniel Richman on the right side. Defenseman Kelvin Armenta blocked the shot straight in the air where goalie Javier Gaona snagged it. Less than 10 seconds later, Warrior forward Angel Muniz found Guevara-Chillin on the right side. His shot was blocked by Gaona.

With 6:20 to play in the half, the Warriors were given a free kick after a foul from 45 yards out in the middle of the field. Chase Overfelt got his shot over the wall and Gaona appeared to get his hands on the ball and push it into the right side bar. The ball caromed back to the center where Guevara-Chillin scored from two yards out to put the Warriors up 1-0.

“Kevin (Guevara-Chillin) is amazing,” said Warrior team captain and defenseman Overfelt. “He has good control on the ball and makes the plays. He is fun to watch.”

Pine View had a great opportunity to score when Cardenas gave a perfect pass on a corner kick to Aaron Canales. Canales’ header went wide right with 4:30 to play. At the half the score was 1-0.

In the second half, the Warriors again threatened first with a breakaway by Monson. Freshman Ryley Duckworth came off goal and slid into Monson to break up the play. Duckworth had replaced Gaona at halftime due to injury.

Duckworth would again come up big with another block on a shot from Guevara-Chilling with 19:20 remaining. The Warrior forward received a pass from Muniz, moved past two Panther defenders and hit a line drive right at Duckworth. Duckworth got another block 25 seconds later against Muniz.

Two minutes later Snow Canyon’s Nino stole a pass, juked a Panther defender, looped the ball upwards and did a sideways bicycle kick that went wide left with 17:30 remaining.

Guevara-Chillin got the second goal off a lob pass from Nino. The quick forward took the pass 30 yards from goal and looped the ball over a sliding Duckworth to take a 2-0 lead with 9:01 remaining.

With 18 minutes remaining, the referee assessed a double yellow on both teams. It was Warrior Casey Monson’s second yellow of the game leading to his ejection. Down a man, the Warriors went into defensive mode. However, the Warriors still got some brilliant offensive play from Nino, who was able to take some counterattacks deep into the Panthers side of the field.

“They gave us our first loss this year,” said SC coach Dustin Gough. “We came out listless in that first game so we wanted to be sure to crank up the intensity and keep attacking. We were able to do that and keep the ball at their defensive end most of the game.”

Snow Canyon moves to 12-3 (7-3) with the win. The Warriors will host first-place Dixie on Tuesday night. Pine View falls to 8-6-1 (7-3) with the loss. The Panthers will host the Cedar Redmen on Tuesday night.

The long drought is over as the Redmen, who played in the state championship game last spring, finally got their first region win in their 10th try.

Cedar, 2-11-1 overall and 1-9-0 in region, gave up the first goal of the game. But the Redmen tied it by halftime and dominated the second half in the victory.

Cedar will look for its second win Tuesday at Pine View. Canyon View, 5-9-1 and 2-9-0, has lost seven straight. The Falcons close out the season next Friday at Snow Canyon.
