ST. GEORGE – Hundreds of people bounced over to Dixie State University in St. George Thursday evening to participate in an attempt to set a world record for the most people bouncing bouncy balls simultaneously. The event was part of the university’s annual D-Week celebration, with this year’s theme “100 years of rock solid tradition.”
“It was great to have so many there having fun,” DSU Student Alumni President Chet Norman said.
A total of 587 people – DSU students and local community members alike – signed in to participate in the big bounce. Each participant was given a goody bag and a numbered bouncy ball with an accompanying ticket.
Participants crowded around the perimeter of a large roped-off area, which was located in the parking lot of the DSU baseball fields, and, when the announcer gave the signal, hundreds of bouncy balls were thrown into the space. The aim was to land the bouncy balls, each bearing an identifying number, into one of 17 buckets placed in the center of the roped-off area; the balls that landed in the buckets were drawn out for prizes.
Hundreds of tiny balls rained down on the parking lot as hopeful participants took careful aim.
Following the mass bounce, the buckets were collected by DSU student volunteers. Children in the crowd then scrambled beneath the rope partition and raced around to scoop up the remaining scattered bouncy balls and take them home as keepsakes.
The crowd then gathered around a stage, where an announcer gave out prizes to the winners. The prizes included gift certificates, DSU swag bags and an iPad mini.
Norman said event organizers haven’t yet been able to confirm what the current record is for bouncy balls, so they’re just going to submit their numbers to Guinness World Records and hope for the best – fingers crossed that their turnout was enough to get DSU on the record books.
“I really hope so,” he said. “We had a lot of people here.”
