Credit union holds free ‘Shred Day’ Saturday

ST. GEORGE — A free shred day for area residents to safely dispose of unwanted, personal documents is being held on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Security Service Federal Credit Union, 1227 East 100 South, in St. George.

“In this day and age, everyone should do what they can to protect themselves from identity theft,” said Greg Reed, vice president of member services. “Free shred days allow folks to permanently and securely get rid of documents containing sensitive information like bank and credit card statements, old tax returns or documents containing account numbers, Social Security numbers, or other identifiable information.”

Drive up and drop off bags and boxes of paper for shredding only. Limit two full boxes per house with maximum dimensions of 18-by-20-by-12 inches. Volunteers from Security Service will help with unloading, and all documents will be shredded on site by Cintas.

The IRS recommends saving tax returns for at least three years after the date of filing. There are some circumstances when tax documents should be kept longer than three years. Check the IRS website for details. Never shred official documents, such as Social Security cards or birth certificates.

Perfect day to announce this: tax day. We can start by shredding the 73,954 pages of the IRS tax code and replacing it with the Fair Tax that has zero loopholes to be exploited by the super wealthy and can’t be used as a political weapon.
