Sleeping bag thief gets arrested while burglarizing vehicles at Home Depot

ST. GEORGE – Police arrested a 32-year-old man Monday after he allegedly went inside a motor home and drank some alcohol before leaving with a sleeping bag and continuing on to burglarize other vehicles.

Officers responded to Home Depot, located at 937 N. Westridge Drive in St. George, on report of a vehicle burglary, according to probable cause statements written by St. George Police officers Michael McRae and Jace Hutchings in support of the arrest.

A man, later identified as Garet David Madsen, of Enterprise, was observed entering and rummaging through vehicles parked in the Home Depot parking lot, according to the statements of probable cause. Madsen was also reported to have been carrying belongings that were suspected to have been stolen from the vehicles.

Officers stopped Madsen, detained him and advised him of his Miranda rights, Hutchings said, and he agreed to speak about the burglary.

Madsen admitted to having entered two separate vehicles that did not belong to him, Hutchings said in the statement. Madsen also admitted to having stolen an LG flip phone from one of the vehicles.

The phone belonged to a Home Depot employee, Hutchings said, and it was later determined that Madsen had not only stolen the cell phone, but also a MasterCard and clothing from the employee’s vehicle.

McRae also responded to the area to question Madsen because he is a suspect in a case McRae was investigating involving a motor home that had been broken into.

He admitted to entering into the motor home and consuming alcohol while inside,” McRae said. “Madsen also admitted to taking a black sleeping bag from inside the motor home.”

During a search of Madsen’s person, McRae’s statement said, he located multiple credit cards inside Madsen’s wallet that did not have his name on them.

(Madsen) stated the Visa Card belongs to one of his old girlfriends,” McRae said in the statement.

Madsen was arrested and booked into the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility.

He was charged with two third-degree felonies for unlawful acquisition of a finance card without consent, three class A misdemeanors for burglary of a vehicle, and two class B misdemeanors for theft.

During Madsen’s initial court appearance before the 5th District Court in St. George, Tuesday, Judge Jeffrey C. Wilcox ordered his bail set at $17,016. The Judge also found Madsen to be indigent and appointed attorney Douglas Terry to represent him during his next court appearance scheduled for April 13.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
