IRON COUNTY – Three people were ejected from a 15-passenger van carrying 10 Brian Head Resort employees when it rolled down a 150-foot ravine Sunday afternoon as they were headed down the canyon to Cedar City.
At approximately 5:15 p.m., the group of 10 people, including both men and women, was headed down the mountain from Brian Head towards Cedar City on state Route 143 near milepost 12.5, when the woman driving lost control of the van, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Ryan Bauer said.
“The van was coming down the canyon and the driver allowed the van to wander off to the right side of the road across the white line onto the shoulder,” Bauer said, “which got them into the loose gravel and dirt and the driver lost control of the van.”
The van then rolled as it spun off into a 150-foot deep ravine, Bauer said. Three people were ejected from the van as it rolled.
“There were no life-threatening injuries,” Bauer said, “but there were some that had broken bones and things like that.”
Life Flight was originally called, he said, but was cancelled before arriving on scene as it was discovered there were no life-threatening injuries. The injured occupants of the vehicle were transported via ambulance to Valley View Medical Center in Cedar City.
Bauer said the van is a shuttle van that belongs to Brian Head.
The investigation into this incident is still ongoing, Bauer said. As this report is published, no citations have been issued.
“We’ve got some investigation to do,” he said. “We’re going to do a safety inspection on the actual van today, this afternoon, just to check for anything possibly mechanical. We’re still doing some interviews and some things like that and we’ll compile it all together and then we’ll take a look at it to see what needs to be done as far as any citations or any charges.”
This report is based on preliminary information provided by UHP at the scene and may not contain the full scope of findings.
