ST. GEORGE – Born in 1913, St. George resident Mary Walker recently celebrated her 102nd birthday in grand fashion: on the back of a motorcycle. The motorcycle ride was the first in Walker’s life, proving, as her family members said, that you are never too old to check something off your bucket list.
The party started like most birthday parties (for a 102-year-old). Friends and family had gathered to celebrate Walker’s life when family members suggested Walker go for her first ride on a motorcycle, Walker’s nephew by marriage and motorcycle driver Drew Cahoon said.
Rather than saying “no,” the vivacious centenarian agreed to a ride and saddled up on the back of Cahoon’s bike and held on.
“I just got on it and wrapped my arms around Drew,” Walker said, “and we took off.”
The duo rode around the town and, upon completing their ride, Walker said, she was asked by Cahoon if she wanted to go again.
“I said, ‘That would be great,’” Walker said.
Walker described the ride as one of the best things she has done in her life, making sure to compliment Cahoon on his driving
Walker has lived an exemplary life and shared her secret for success in her special recipe for long life:
- Taking natural nutritional supplements on a daily basis, including: cayenne pepper, cinnamon, ginger, apple cider vinegar, honey, knox, gelatin, potassium and zinc
- Daily crossword puzzles, word games, genealogy, indexing on the computer and reading
- Daily exercising and crocheting
- Socializing often
Walker’s son, Dwight Baker, said that up until last year when she was 101, Walker, who didn’t learn how to use a computer until she was 85, still used email and social media to communicate with her family.
At the time of her 100th birthday on March 17, 2013, Walker had a posterity of four children, 21 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild.
Walker said her 102nd was a very happy birthday.
“I couldn’t believe that I am that old anyhow,” Walker said. “I think they made a mistake.”
