ST. GEORGE — And just like that, the Pine View Panthers are all alone in first place in Region 9.
Pine View’s 3-1 road win against Snow Canyon, coupled with Dixie’s 1-1 tie at Hurricane, puts the Panthers all alone in first place three games into the Region 9 schedule. There’s a long way to game, but PV is sitting pretty after the road win.
Michael Cardenas, Michael Wade and Federico Resendis all scored for the Panthers in the game played at Warriors Stadium. Pine View never trailed in the game and built a 2-0 lead by halftime. Snow Canyon was able to get on the board kin the second half with a goal by Angel Muniz. It is Muniz’s ninth goal of the season, which leads 3A.
Pine View, which is 4-3-1 overall, improves to 3-0-0 in region play, two points ahead of second-place Dixie. The Panthers’ three goals are two more than the Warriors had given up all season. PV keeper Javier Gaona held SC to one goal. The Warriors had been averaging more than five goals a game on offense. Pine View is off until next Tuesday, when the Panthers host Hurricane.
Snow Canyon takes its first loss of the season and is now 7-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in region. The Warriors are at Desert Hills Friday night.
Dixie 1, Hurricane 1 (F/2 OT)
The defenses ruled the night out in the Hurricane Valley, with both teams picking up a goal in the first half, then going silent on offense the rest of the night.
Av’ry Green scored for Dixie, his third goal of the season. JD Stanworth notched his first score of the season ion the first half for the Tigers. Ethan Poulton (Dixie) and Kaden Jackson (Hurricane) played well in goal in the contest.
The Flyers, 3-2-3 overall and 2-0-1 in region, have a home game against Cedar Friday night in a rematch of last season’s state championship game. Dixie beat the Redmen 3-1 in Rio Tinto Stadium for the 3A title.
Hurricane, 2-2-2 overall and 0-1-1 in region, is allowing less than two goals per game. The Tigers are at Canyon View Friday at 4 p.m.
Canyon View 2, Cedar 1
Chris Perez had the Golden Goal for the Falcons, who broke a four-game losing streak to the Redmen dating back to 2012.
Canyon View, 4-2-1 overall and 1-2-0 in region, hadn’t beaten their crosstown rivals since a 2-0 win late in the 2012 season. The Falcons play host to Hurricane Friday, 4 p.m., in a battle of two non-playoff teams from last season who are both improved and looking to qualify for the 2015 postseason.
Cedar, 1-4-1 and 0-2-0, has lost four straight. The Redmen will travel to Dixie for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday night.
