CEDAR CITY – Valley View Medical Center is taking center stage after being named one of the nation’s top 100 hospitals in the March issue of Modern Healthcare magazine by the national health care analytics firm Truven Health Analytics.
According to a press release from Valley View Medical Center, the Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals study selects hospitals and leadership teams that provide the highest level of care and value to their communities. The choices are calculated on a national scorecard measuring overall performance based on 11 key measures including patient care, operational efficiency and financial stability.
In the release, Valley View Medical Center CEO Jason Wilson said he was thrilled to hear the hospital made the cut, and that the hospital has worked hard towards improving its performance.
“Several years ago we reviewed data and hospital performance at Valley View, and noticed opportunities for improvement,” Wilson said in the release. “So we began a highly focused effort, which included everyone from our volunteer hospital board of trustees, to management, to medical staff, to our frontline staff.”
According to the release, Truven Health researchers evaluated close to 3,000 different short-term, acute care, nonfederal hospitals. Researchers analyzed public information such as Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data and core measures, and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Hospital Compare reports.
“This year’s 100 Top Hospitals represent the highest national standards in hospital care and management today,” Truven Health Senior Vice President for Performance and Improvement Jean Chenoweth said. “They set the benchmarks for peers around the country to follow – consistently delivering outstanding quality of care, satisfaction and community value at a reasonable cost,”
Hospitals cannot apply to receive this award, the release said.
The Truven Health study shows, the release said, that if every hospital in the U.S. performed at the level of the Top 100 Hospitals winners:
- 126,471 additional lives could be saved
- 108,926 additional patients could be complication-free
- $1.8 billion in inpatient costs could be saved
- The average patient stay would decrease by half a day
- Episode-of-illness expense would be 2 percent lower than the peer average
Valley View’s intent is to be one of the best hospitals in the nation, Wilson said in the statement, and that the hospital is a reflection of the area it is located in.
“We all know that Cedar City and Iron County is a wonderful place to live, and the quality of health care I think reflects the quality of life we enjoy here,” Wilson said. “We believe that the quality of care here at Valley View Medical Center measures up with the best facilities anywhere in the country and we’re proud to receive this award.”
