ST. GEORGE — For anyone keeping score, there were four baseball tournaments (involving five local teams), two soccer tournaments (with three local teams), plus four non-league soccer games and even a couple of non-region softball games in town Friday. And it all continues Saturday in Utah’s Dixie all day Saturday.

In baseball, Dixie hosted the Pizza Hut Classic and split a pair of games, Desert Hills hosted the DH Invitational, also splitting a pair, Snow Canyon hosted the Buck’s Ace KJ Harrison Classic and Pine View and Hurricane teamed up for a tournament at the two schools, with the Panthers splitting a pair of games and the Tigers splitting two. Cedar won two games and Canyon View split two games during their participation in the local baseball tournaments.

In boys soccer, Desert Hills, Canyon View, Cedar, Hurricane and Snow Canyon all got non-region wins, while Cedar and Canyon View also played to tie games and Dixie and Pine View took losses to bigger schools.

In softball, Cedar and Dixie got wins, while Hurricane took a loss.

Here’s a rundown of Friday’s action:

The Flyers opened the season with a loss Friday afternoon, but rebounded with a win in the nightcap, in a mercy-rule shortened game over the Stallions.

“It’s the first day of the season and this is just what we expected,” Dixie coach Danny Ipson said. “We’ve got a couple of things we need to work on over the next week, some things we need to improve upon. But overall I’m very pleased with the effort and performances of some of our folks.”

Drew Bailey was the star of the win over Stansbury, getting the win on the mound and also nearly hitting for the cycle. Bailey had a double and a triple in a huge first inning that sent the Flyers off toward the win.

“I’m so beyond stoked that it’s baseball season,” Bailey said. “I couldn’t even sleep last night. It was like Christmas Eve. I couldn’t wait for today to get here.”

In the early game, Dixie got behind 13-3, but rallied for seven runs in the seventh inning. The Flyers ran out of outs though, and took the three-run loss. Dixie pitching struggled with wildness in both games.

“We’ve just got to go out and throw some more strikes and give our defense a chance to make some more plays,” Ipson said. “Pitching was a little suspect today, but hitting the ball, we’ve got a couple of guys through the middle of the line-up who are doing really well.”

Dixie plays Box Elder at 1 p.m. Saturday and then an opponent to be determined at 4 p.m.

Cedar 20, Bear River 0
Cedar 9, Tooele 3

The Redmen scored 10 runs in the first inning against the Bears and with ace Brecken Lewis on the mound, that was more than enough. Rykker Tom had a triple and Cedar scored 9 unanswered to beat the Buffaloes in the other game at Bruce Hurst Field.

Dusty Hanna doubled and also pitched the win against Tooele, while Tom also doubled in the Bear River game. The Redmen battle Carbon at 10 a.m. Saturday and will play an opponent to be determined at 4 p.m.

Tiger-Panther Classic
Pine View 15, Hunter 0
Park City 1, Pine View 0 (F/9)

The Panthers were all offense against the Wolverines, with four extra-base hits and Dakota Donavan cruising in the five inning mercy-rule game. But that well dried up against the Miners as PV managed just one hit off of PC senior Scott Stokes. Stokes, who was 6-1 last season, went eight innings, then gave way to a relief pitcher, who allowed just one hit in the ninth. Stokes allowed just one walk and struck out 11.

Harrison Goebel pitched five innings of no-hit ball. Reliever brooks Barney took the loss, though he allowed just one run and three hits in four innings of work.

The Panthers play at noon on Saturday at PVHS.

Hurricane 3, Delta 2
Union 4, Hurricane 1

Drake Hermansen had the fine performance on the mound in the Tigers win over Delta. Hurricane pushed home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning. The Union Cougars handed HHS the loss in the other game.

Hurricane plays Grantsville in a morning game and then will face a yet to be determined foe at noon at Tigers Field.

KJ Harrison Classic
Snow Canyon 7, Lehi 6
Snow Canyon 4, Bountiful 1

In the early game, the Warriors surrendered a 6-4 lead, but won the game in the bottom of the seventh. Chance Thorkleson had three hits, including a double, and Isaac Rhea homered for Snow Canyon.

In the late game, SC outlasted the Bountiful Braves, scoring three in the fifth and one in the sixth to overcome a 1-0 deficit. Ike Jorgensen pitched the complete game for SC, allowing no earned runs.
Canyon View 2, Maple Mountain 0
Cimarron Memorial 8, Canyon View 6

Jaden Black pitched the shutout and also had a double against the Golden Eagles. CV scored the only runs of the game in the top of the fifth to get that win.

Against Las Vegas school Cimarron, the Nevada school came away with the victory. The games were played at Snow Canyon High School.

CV will play at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday.

Desert Hills Invitational
Desert Hills 11, Timpanogos 1
Hillcrest 5, Desert Hills 2

The Thunder had 14 hits against the T-Wolves, including home runs by Brayson Hurdsman and Cam Winget and a triple by Chad Nelson. Kayson Bowler got the win on the bump for D-Hills, pitching five innings of two-hit baseball.

Against 5A Hillcrest, the Thunder watched a 2-1 lead evaporate in the final three innings. The Huskies out-hit DH 9-4 in the game. Chad Nelson took the loss. Wyatt Bendall had a home run and a triple in the game for DHHS.

The Thunder will play two more games on Saturday.

BOYS SOCCER

Desert Hills beat Park City 1-0, with Trevor Ottenschot getting the shutout and Blake Evans scoring the lone goal. Bryson Colemere scored the only goal as 5A Alta beat Dixie 1-0. Jonathan Hernandez had two goals and Matt Bench got the shutout as Canyon View beat Summit Academy 5-0. Angel Muniz, Kevin Guevara Chillin and parker Jenkins all notched goals for Snow Canyon in the Warriors 3-0 win over Uintah. Pine View couldn’t score on Maple Mountain goalie Spencer Young in a 1-0 loss to the Golden Eagles. Traycen Shamo scored twice as the Tigers got their first win, a 2-1 decision over Uintah. Cedar beat Union 4-0 and also played to a 1-1 draw against Park City. Canyon View also got a tie, this one 2-2, against Manti.

SOFTBALL

There were three local softball teams in action. Dixie scored eight runs in the fourth inning to blow past Enterprise 8-5 with Summer Simkins getting the win in the circle. Cedar blasted Manti 15-5. Hurricane fell to 0-2 with an 18-8 loss to Parowan.
