ST. GEORGE — All are welcome as the Southern Utah Heritage Choir will present a musical fireside, “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” Sunday at 7 p.m. in the St. George Tabernacle, 18 S. Main St. in St. George.
As a tribute to the wonder of God’s creations, the Heritage Choir will feature music and the spoken word that gives gratitude to the Savior during this beautiful spring season, it stated in its press release.
Nancy Allred and Ken Peterson will be directing the choir, with Brandon Lee, pianist, and Karen Cantera, organist.
The choir will perform many beautiful selections such as “Take Our Lives,” “Alleluia,” “Joy in the Morning,” “For the Beauty of the Earth,” “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” and “Redeemer of Israel.”
Guest speakers for this fireside will be Dr. Susan Easton Black and Dr. George D. Durrant, both renowned professors, authors, and historians.
Susan Easton Black
Black joined the faculty of Brigham Young University in 1978, where she was professor of church history and doctrine. She also served as associate dean of general education and honors and director of church history in the religious studies center. The recipient of numerous academic awards, Black received the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award in 2000, the highest award given a professor on the BYU Provo campus.
Specializing in research on Joseph Smith and the early Latter-day Saints, and particularly on the Missouri and Nauvoo periods, Black has authored, edited, and compiled more than 100 books and 250 articles. She was married to Harvey B. Black, who was a professor of instructional psychology and technology at BYU, prior to his death.
George D. Durrant
Durrant is the author of more than 20 books, including the bestsellers “Love at Home — Starring Father” and “Don’t Forget the Star.” He taught religion at BYU and worked in many capacities for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Education System. He also served as director of priesthood genealogy for the LDS Church. His education earned him a Bachelor of Science in art from BYU, a Master in Educational Administration from BYU and a doctorate of education in educational administration from BYU.
Durrant was born and raised in American Fork, Utah. He is a master storyteller and loves telling stories to his eight children, 34 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. After the death of his wife, Marilyn, in 2011, Durrant married Susan Easton Black in 2013.
Southern Utah Heritage Choir
The choir is preparing a busy season of performances with an Easter concert on April 3, a spring concert on April 10 in the Cox Auditorium on the campus of Dixie State University, 225 S. University Ave. in St George, with award-winning soprano Lisa Hopkins Seegmiller, and a tour to San Diego in May for the Mormon Battalion.
