ST. GEORGE – Emergency responders came to the aid of man’s best friend Tuesday night after a dog got itself wedged in a crevice in the area around the Dixie Rock in St. George.
While attending a conference in St. George, the dog’s owners decided to hike around Dixie Rock at Pioneer Park when the canine, described as a cattle dog mix, walked into a crevice and wasn’t able to exit, St. George Fire Capt. Coty Chadburn said.
“The dog went through a crevice, just on flat ground, thinking it could make it through when it got about halfway and got stuck,” Chadburn said. “Its back hips got wedged between the rock walls.”
Prior to calling for emergency responders at about 7:30 p.m., Chadburn said, the dog’s owners did what they could to try and get the animal out by using rakes, ropes and shovels. When that didn’t work, they called for help.
Members of the responding St. George Fire crew had to climb on top of the rock formations and work their way down about 12-13 feet to get to the dog, Chadburn said.
“We were able to go up there, and with some finagling with some rope and some of our tools, we were able to get rope around the dog and the collar and pull him straight up,” Chadburn said. “The dog was wedged in there pretty good.”
The dog was tired, though in good condition, and the owners were “very appreciative,” Chadburn said. They feared they’d never get the dog out, he said.
Personnel from the St. George Police Department were also on scene.
