ST. GEORGE – Snow is falling in St. George and surrounding areas. No “snow day” for Washington County students. Alerts issued by the National Weather Service and Utah Department of Transportation over the weekend for central and Southern Utah remain in effect through Tuesday, with updated advisories for Kane and Garfield counties in particular.

A new advisory was issued at 2:18 a.m. PST, 3:18 a.m. MST, by the NWS for Mesquite, Nevada, and surrounding areas.

Southern Utah

St. George 2,880 feet above sea level and is experiencing snow Monday morning.

The NWS issued a winter storm warning for Glen Canyon Recreation Area, including Lake Powell, forecasting heavy snow with 3-6 inches of snow accumulation in those areas through Tuesday morning.

The Service also issued an advisory for Utah’s Dixie and Zion National Park forecasting up to 2 inches of snow accumulations in the area through noon Monday.

Update 10 a.m. – St. George residents in the area of Valley View to Dixie Drive experienced a power outage beginning at approximately 4:20 a.m. Monday affecting about 1,000 customers of the City of St. George. A vehicle hit a power pole, knocking a couple wires loose which closed the circuit, thereby causing the outage, Mortensen said.  By 7 a.m. power was fully restored to all customers.

Update 10:45 a.m. – At 10:33 a.m. the NWS canceled its “Winter Weather Advisory” for Utah’s Dixie, stating, “Road conditions have greatly improved from the earlier snow.”

Schools and school busses in Washington County – School busses are running for Washington County School District and schools will be in session.

• The district posted that schools will start at regular times; however students who arrive late will not be marked tardy due to weather-related issues.
• Delays are expected on school bus routes, especially in the Diamond and Dammeron Valley areas.
• Update 7:30 a.m. from the district: School buses will not be traveling on steeper hills in the are such as – Foremaster Ridge, East Ridge, Staheli Hill, Santa Clara Hill, Airport Road and others.
• Update 7:40 a.m. from the district: School will still be held today but if parents feel that they want to keep their students home due to the road conditions students will not be marked absent. This is for all areas in Washington County School District.
• Update 7:50 a.m. Washington County District dispatched this message to parents: “If you live in an area that requires a school bus to travel up a hill, the school bus will not go there today. Please take your children to a bus stop that is not on a hill or directly to school.”
• Update 8:15 a.m. A school bus slid off the road at mile marker 20 on state Route 59. St. George Communications Center dispatcher said the children are uninjured and fine.
• Update 8:35 a.m. Hurricane preschool is canceled today. All other preschools are in session.

St. George roads and transportation

7:30 a.m. UDOT notes road impacts due to heavy snow showers impacting all routes through St. George, including I-15. 

7:45 a.m. City of St. George is closing 200 East all the way down and may close down Hope Street and Main Street. St. George Police specified 200 East is closed north of St. George Boulevard.

8 a.m. St. George Police Department cautions on its Facebook: “Hills, bridges,and curves will be very slippery and the Streets Department is out trying to address the issues. Be safe.”

8:10 a.m. SGPD posts: Red Hills Parkway has been plowed and crews have been working to salt the bridges around town. Currently the issues are at:

• 200 East from St. George Boulevard to the Parkway – closed
• 200 N Man – Roundabout closed (cars traveling South on main sliding through roundabout)
• Ridgeview Drive – in the process of being closed
• 400 North –  in the process of being closed

8:30 a.m. Washington County Emergency Services posted that motor vehicle accidents and slick road conditions are being reported throughout the county, and noted that 200 East from 200 North and Skyline Drive to Red Hills Parkway is currently closed due to slick road conditions.

8:50 a.m. SunTran buses are operational, running all routes as normal. UDOT has plowed Sunset Boulevard, Bluff Street and St. George Boulevard, Assistant to the City Manager Marc Mortensen said, and is making its services available to the city if needed.

The City of St. George has some backhoes out, one is currently clearing Diagonal St., Mortensen said. And the City is concentration throughout the day on the decks of bridges.

“They’ve frozen up,” Mortensen said of the decks of bridges, “so we have two trucks with ice spreaders on them maintaining those bridges .”

9:35 a.m. Washington County Emergency Services reports that 200 East is reopened.

Hurricane – added 9:30 a.m.

Hurricane roads and state highways have a lot of snow on the road, are slick and Hurricane Police Department advises motorists to drive slowly, take plenty of time to get to needed destinations, police Sgt. Brando Buell said.

Road closures have included state Route 59 in the area of mile marker 20 and 600 North; SR-59 reopened at 8:55 a.m. and 600 North is reopening at 9:25 a.m.

On SR-59 at mile marker 20, a school bus and a semitruck-trailer slid off the road and blocked traffic, resulting in a road closure in both directions for about 45 minutes, Buell said. Several cars also slid off in that area at the time.

As several cars slid on SR-59, one vehicle slid off the road and hit a woman who was outside of her vehicle. The woman suffered what appeared to be minor injuries, Buell said, and was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George by Hurricane Ambulance. No citations were issued, the accident was weather-related.

Mesquite, Nevada

Periods of snow above 3,500 feet are expected to continue into Monday morning. Accumulating snow levels were forecast to drop as low as 3,000 feet Monday morning, with 3-6 inches accumulations above 3,500 feet, and a mix of rain and snow down to 2,500 feet. Winds at 10-15 mph were forecast for the area.

10 a.m. The NWS canceled its “Winter Weather Adviory” for the Southern Nevada area at 8:59 PST, 9:59 a.m. MST, stating that any additional snow showers will result in little or no snow accumulation.

Interstate and highway travel impacts

9 a.m. Kolob Canyons Road is closed due to snow, according to a tweet by Zion National Park.

UDOT’s restriction on semitrailer-trucks on state Route 14 due to hazardous road conditions remains in place as long as the storm over the area continues.

UDOT noted road impacts due to heavy snow showers impacting all routes through St. George, including I-15.

Travel will be difficult on some area roadway and through mountain passes, particularly along Interstate 15, according to the NWS advisory for Southern Nevada.

Snow packed and icy conditions could impact travel on Highways 93 and 95 in Southern Nevada, particularly near Indian Springs and Searchlight.
