ST. GEORGE — Portions of the River Road and Riverside Drive intersection in St. George were shut down Monday night after a two-vehicle collision.
The accident occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m., St. George Police Sgt. Sam Despain said, and involved a white Nissan Sentra and a white Chevy Malibu.
The Malibu, driven by a 20-year-old woman and carrying one passenger, had been traveling west on Riverside Drive, Despain said, when the eastbound Sentra, driven by a 19-year-old woman and carrying two passengers, attempted to make a left turn onto River Road.
“The Sentra basically turned in front of the Malibu and they collided,” Despain said.
Officers from the St. George Police Department responded to the scene along with members of the St. George Fire Department, who assisted with the debris clean up. The westbound left-turn lane along with the eastbound right-turn lane on Riverside Drive were shut down during the clean up process; along with both left turn lanes on River Road.
While both cars required the assistance of tow trucks to be removed from the scene, Despain said, the occupants of both cars sustained only minor injures and did not require transportation to the hospital.
The scene was cleared and traffic was allowed to continue as usual by 10:20 p.m. Because she turned in front of the Malibu, Despain said, the driver of the Sentra was issued a citation for failure to yield to oncoming traffic. He also offered some simple words of advice.
“You need to yield to oncoming traffic, don’t turn in front of a car.”

The city should use the green turn arrows, especially on the busier streets.
Yeah, this happened to me 3 years ago on River Rd by Freddies car car wash…19 ya old girl just turned directly in front of me in her pickup and totaled my Firebird, I’m still sad about losing that car, and angry about injuries I still suffer from 3 years later. Please people…..LOOK before you make those turns, this girl didn’t even stop…and ran right over the top of my car….head on.
Can’t imagine not seeing an oncoming vehicle, unless I was taking a selfie.

What’s the rush for everyone here? It’s not like it takes long to get anywhere in Washington County for goodness sake! Slow down and wait for cars to pass! Maybe we need to start asking questions of the local driver’s training instructors. Exactly what are they teaching all these new drivers that makes them believe they have to rush into a turn rather than wait until it’s clear?
