David Golden Coon

Coon, David (1)(June 25, 1933 – February 13, 2015)

David Golden Coon, 81, died February 13, 2015. David was born June 25, 1933, to Wilford and Zula Morgan Coon, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from Cyprus High School in 1951. He married Janice Rushton Coon on November 6, 1953, in the Salt Lake City Temple. They were married 61 years.

David was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as branch president of the Hunter Hills Singles Branch for four and a half years. David and his wife also served as lead missionaries at the bishop’s storehouse, in St. George, Utah, for one and a half years. His other callings were; stake sunday school president, stake seventies president and gospel doctrine teacher.

David worked for Kennecott Copper for 30 years and was union vice president for many years. After retiring from Kennecott, he sold real estate for 10 years, and later was president of the Leeds Water Company.

David enjoyed spending time with his family. He coached his sons’ baseball teams for seven years. He enjoyed gardening, hiking, and watching BYU games.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Coon; their seven children, Calla (Paul) Widerburg, Jared (Judy) Coon, Tammy Drake, Aaron (Kristen) Coon, Paul (Jodie) Coon, Adam Coon, and Goldie (Brandon) Bonewell.

He received great joy from his 30 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Verla (Rumel) Whithers. David was preceded in death by his parents, Wilford and Zula Coon; and sisters, Leona Bergstrom and Laree Coon.

Funeral Services

  • Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m. at the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, 110 South Bluff, St. George, Utah.
  • A viewing will be Thursday, Feb. 19, from 7-8 p.m. and Friday, from noon to 1 p.m. prior to services at the mortuary.
  • Interment will take place in the Leeds City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donation can be made to Janice Coon for the family missionary fund.

Arrangements have been made under the direction of Spilsbury Mortuary, 435-673-2454. Friends and family unable to come to the services are able to watch the funeral live online, enter the event #7757 and the password ETT4X.
