ST. GEORGE – Utah Highway Patrol troopers nabbed a hit-and-run driver Monday after the man struck another vehicle on the Interstate in the Virgin River Gorge and then fled the scene. It was later discovered the man had been driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.
At approximately 1 p.m., an attempt-to-locate alert was issued for a white sedan after the car hit another vehicle from behind on the Arizona stretch of Interstate 15 in the Virgin River Gorge, and then left the accident scene.
“It happened just near the construction zone,” Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Matthew Pratt said.
UHP Trooper Chris Terry was near the state line when the call came through and saw the vehicle as it passed, Pratt said. Terry was able to catch up to the vehicle and pull it over on the Utah side near milepost 2. Pratt arrived shortly after that.
The troopers conducted a field sobriety test and the man, identified as David Scott Webber, of Hurricane, did not pass. His blood alcohol content registered at 0.121, Pratt said.
Webber was arrested without incident and was transported to the Washington County Purgatory Correction Facility. He was booked on one class B misdemeanor DUI charge and is being held on $1,420 bail, according to current booking information at the time of this publication. His vehicle was impounded.
Responders from the Arizona Department of Public Safety took over the investigation of the collision, as it occurred in Arizona, Pratt said. In addition to being arrested on the DUI charge, Webber was also issued a citation by AZDPS for causing the crash.
The vehicle that was hit by Webber in the Gorge sustained only minor damage, Pratt said.
