HURRICANE – “My Funny Valentine,” presented by Rattlin’ D Playhouse in Hurricane, offers the perfect date opportunity for you and your valentine. If the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, the delectable dinner will hit the spot; and if a woman’s love is to be won by either laughter or romance, Rattlin’ D has you well covered for both. It’s also good, clean humor that kids will enjoy, providing a superb option for anyone looking to take the whole family out for an evening on the town.
Southern Utah has its fair share of theater offerings, but for my money – and my hankering for humor – the Rattlin’ D Playhouse is by far and away my favorite.
That’s a bold statement to make, especially considering the many worthy and wonderful production troupes in our neck of the woods. But I love to laugh, and the Rattlin’ D players could give Jim Carrey a run for his money when it comes to outright screwball hilarity.
“My Funny Valentine,” this year’s incarnation of Rattlin’ D’s gut-busting month-of-love musical revue, plays through Feb. 21. If laughter is the best medicine, then attending a Rattlin’ D performance is as good as a trip to the doctor – and they throw in a prime rib dinner for your trouble (my doctor never does that).
For Rattlin’ D regulars who saw “Funny Valentine” last year, don’t stay away because you’ve already seen the show – they’ve totally changed it up from 2014, and it’s just as hysterical as ever.
“My Funny Valentine” presents a blend of fantastic musical numbers (the entire ensemble sings a harmonized version of “Say Something” that will knock your socks off) and hilarious jokes and skits that’ll make you laugh until you cry. There were people sitting at the table behind me that were literally gasping for breath.
“My Funny Valentine” offers the full entertainment package: During the scrumptious, optional pre-show dinner – your choice of prime rib or chicken, both delicious, along with salad, potatoes, maple carrots, a dinner roll and cheesecake for dessert – an awesomely talented young man plays the piano as pre-show entertainment, and he is just amazing. Then, of course, the show starts, and the mix of raucous comedy interspersed with gorgeous musical numbers is just a delightful blend – a little salt and then a little sweet, like chocolate-covered nuts for your entertainment palate.
For those who have never attended a Rattlin’ D production, all I can say is, “Oh, my heck!” There are only two good reasons I can think of for staying away from Rattlin’ D:
- You hate to laugh.
- You have a heart condition that makes it medically unsafe for you to laugh until your head hurts and you can’t breathe.
If neither of those reasons apply, you seriously must and should experience “My Funny Valentine” – and every other Rattlin’ D theatrical offering that comes rattling down the track.
Further inducement to check out this fantastic group right away is Drew Durrant, Rattlin’ D’s head honcho, announced at Monday night’s show that the troupe will be heading to Idaho to perform this summer, which means the Rattlin’ D players won’t be back in action in Southern Utah until the fall. That means you’ll have to wait months and months for another chance to laugh until it hurts – or else drive to Idaho, and who wants to do that?
