CEDAR CITY – Cedar City Police arrested two Cedar City men on various charges relating to an alleged assault and robbery Wednesday at the Township Pharmacy after a 50-year-old woman was struck on the head from behind and had her medication stolen. Police officers had been summoned to the pharmacy at 9:15 a.m. on report of a robbery.
According to a statement posted by the Police Department on its Facebook, the woman exited the pharmacy and headed to her vehicle. Before she could reach her vehicle a man approached her from behind and struck her on the head. The man then allegedly stole the medication she had just purchased, the department’s post said.
The woman ran back into the pharmacy looking for assistance, and another customer of the pharmacy took chase.
According to the department’s post, the customer chased the suspect on foot through a field north of the pharmacy and told police he saw the suspect enter a white pickup truck, in which a male driver appeared to be waiting for him.
The pharmacy customer was able to provide descriptions to the police for both of the men he saw.
Another eyewitness told police that she believed the suspect was Reynaldo Martinez, the department’s post said.
Police broadcast an attempt to locate over police radio providing the descriptions given them of the men and the vehicle.
The white pickup truck was spotted within a few minutes on Interstate 15 in Cedar City, the department’s post said. Martinez, 28, was positively identified as the passenger and William Braddock Isom, 26 was identified as the driver.
According to a Facebook post on Iron County Rant and Rave posted by Keith A. Snyder, who identified himself as the son of the woman allegedly assaulted, his mother knew the man who struck her.
In fact, Snyder’s post said, Martinez had offered to take his mother to pick up her medication the day before.
“Only God knows what might have happened to my mother if she accepted his offer,” Snyder wrote in his post.
Cedar City Police confirmed the connection between the suspects and the woman in the department’s post:
“Through the investigation,” the department’s post said, “it was discovered that Martinez and Isom were acquaintances with the victim and her family. Isom reportedly had knowledge that the victim would be filling her prescription and had even offered to give her a ride to the pharmacy. ”
Martinez and Isom were both charged with robbery, a second-degree felony. Martinez was also charged with theft, a class B misdemeanor; tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony; possession of a controlled substance, a second-degree felony; and is being held on an immigration detainer.
As of 8 p.m. Thursday both men are still in custody at the Iron County Jail. Bail for Isom is set at $10,000 cash only. Bail for Martinez is set at $15,000 cash only, and he has an Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold on him.
Though he is currently in the country legally, a representative at the jail said Martinez could lose his permanent resident card if convicted of a felony.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
