IVINS – Students and parents were in for a bit of a scare Monday afternoon when a woman lost control of her vehicle in a school carpool lane and, according to witnesses, barreled through kids waiting to be picked up.

Autumn Reid said her husband was picking up their kids at approximately 3 p.m. at Vista Charter School, located at 585 E. Center St. in Ivins, when the incident occurred.

“She hit a car, then drove over 200 feet through children waiting to be picked up, then hit a chain-link fence by the crosswalk,” Reid said in an email to St. George News.

Reid added there were more than 80 kids in the woman’s path.

In another email to St. George News, Dawn Wright also described the incident:

“… a driver ran through the carpool lane hitting cars, sending students running, screaming, and jumping out of the way, and eventually smashing into the playground fence … “

Santa Clara-Ivins City Police Officer Chad Holt said the incident was a single-vehicle accident, mostly involving a chain-link fence, and that the woman didn’t hit any kids during the ordeal.

“It was either a vehicle error or operator error – more likely operator error,” Holt said.

The woman claimed there may have been something wrong with the vehicle such as brake failure, Holt said, or that it was possible she could have accidentally hit the gas.

“She wasn’t impaired in any way, though,” he said, “but she was just nervous.”

No injuries were reported, Holt said. The only damage sustained during the incident was to the chain-link fence, he said.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement and witnesses and may not contain the full scope of findings.

I was there and this story does not make sense at all, my grandson was among the group of students and almost got hit by this vehicle if it wasn’t for another driver who alerted the kids with his horn about the upcoming out of control vehicle. A further investigation should be done by police.

This is not correct. While there were a few children in the parking lot, she did NOT “hit cars and send children running and screaming”. One car was hit… my son’s vehicle. She ran over a curb and hit the fence. From my son’s first hand view there was one single child in the path and was blessed not to have been hit and injured. In our day and age we need not blow things out of proportion. .. We already live with you much stress.

What people who get into these types of collisions say happened:
    “I accidentally hit the gas”

    What actually happened:
“I was paying more attention to the text message I just got from my (insert whomever here) then I was to my driving in this crowded parking lot so when I looked up and realized that there were actually people in the parking lot it startled me and my foot hit the gas because it was no where near the brake to begin with. Oops. My bad.”

I saw where it happened (I had already left the school with my daughter) and It seemed more like she hit the wrong pedal, because the traffic is stop and go and to have hit a car on the way AND kept going into the fence, doesn’t seem possible going as slow as we go. I can’t imagine how scared those kids (and parents) were, though, and I’m glad the school had counselors the next day to talk to the kids
